How to properly pack parts with VCI packaging

VCI packaging protects metal components against corrosion for up to several years – without oil, grease, or post-treatment. Correct packing takes under a minute. Incorrect packing provides no protection. Here is the difference.

What is VCI packaging?

VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. The plastic or paper is impregnated with corrosion-inhibiting molecules that evaporate into the packaging and form an invisible layer on all metal surfaces. This layer stops corrosion from moisture, oxygen, and acidic gases – even in crevices and cavities that are impossible to reach with coating.

When the parts are unpacked, the molecules evaporate without leaving any residue. No cleaning is necessary before assembly or further processing.

How to pack parts with VCI packaging

The illustration shows steps one through three: the part is placed in a VCI bag or wrapped in VCI paper, excess air is pressed out, and the packaging is sealed tightly.

Sealed and ready. The VCI molecules fill the space inside the bag and protect all metal surfaces – even those not visible from the outside.

Three rules for correct packing

• Minimize the air space. The less air inside the bag, the faster the VCI vapor reaches saturation and full protection. Press out excess air before sealing.
• Seal tightly. The VCI vapor stays inside and protects for a long time only if the packaging is airtight. Use tape, zip-lock bags, or clips – depending on the type of packaging.
• Do not use gloves with silicone. Silicone residue on the metal surface can prevent the VCI molecules from adhering. Use clean cotton or nitrile gloves.

Storage or shipping – what fits best?

For long-term storage, we recommend a VCI bag or barrier foil with desiccant. By combining VCI with silica gel, you ensure protection even in damp storage facilities. Read more about the combination of VCI and desiccant here.

How long does VCI packaging protect?: It depends on the type and tightness. A sealed Zerust VCI bag typically provides 2 years of protection under normal storage conditions.

Does VCI work on all metals?: Yes. VCI protects steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and most alloys. There are specific types for certain metals. No effect on plastic or rubber.

Can I reuse the VCI bag after the protection period has expired?: No. Once the bag has been used for 2 years, the VCI capacity is exhausted. Always use new packaging.

Do I need to clean the part before packing?: Yes. Remove moisture, salts, and dirt. Flash rust can occur on steel surfaces that are damp at the time of packing – even with VCI.
