How to prevent rust on your bicycle and motorcycle this winter

Autumn is here, and the cycling season is coming to an end. Most people roll their bike into the shed or garage and don't think about it again until the snow melts. The problem is what happens in the meantime.

Moisture and temperature fluctuations in an uninsulated shed are the perfect recipe for corrosion. Screws rust. Aluminum oxidizes and becomes dull. Chrome parts lose their shine. A standard tarp might keep the rain out, but it traps moisture inside and often makes matters worse.

What is VCI, and why does it work?

VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. Simply put, the cover emits invisible molecules that form a protective layer on all metal inside the cover. This layer stops the chemical reaction that creates rust. You cannot see it, you cannot feel it, and it leaves no residue. When you remove the cover in the spring, the protection dissipates on its own.

Frequently asked questions about VCI covers for bikes and motorcycles

Does the VCI cover work if the bike is outside: The cover is water-resistant and UV-resistant, but you get the best protection in a shed, garage, or under a roof. VCI works best in an enclosed space where the molecules can build up.

Do I need to clean the bike first: Yes. Wipe off moisture and heavy dirt before putting the cover on. VCI stops new corrosion, but does not remove existing rust.

Does VCI leave anything on paint or rubber: No. VCI molecules only affect metal and do not affect plastic, rubber, or paint.

How long does the protection last: Zerust specifies up to 5 years. For winter storage, one cover will last for many seasons.
